1919 AL - Games of Friday, 6 June

Tigers 3, Red Sox 2: Howard Ehmke allowed only one earned run over nine innings, and also had two hits and two RBI to lead the Tigers over the Red Sox. Ehmke (3-7) split open a 2-2 tie in the 4th when he logged the second of back-to-back two-baggers with Eddie Ainsmith and then wriggled free of a bases-loaded jam in the 7th to ensure that run remained decisive before setting down the final six Sox in order. Bobby Veach tallied three base hits for Detroit while Dave Shean and Amos Strunk each had two of Boston’s seven safeties. [box]

Nationals 7, Browns 2: Washington knocked Dave Davenport (1-5) from the box with a six-run 6th inning that allowed Jim Shaw to cruise to victory at home. The game was tied at 1-1 when Howie Shanks led off with a ground ball to short that Donie Bush couldn’t handle, and this was a sign of things to come for the Nats - the next three men reached safely, including Shaw’s RBI double, and there were four more Washington hits in the inning before Ernie Koob could come on and staunch the bleeding. Shaw (4-4) allowed only a single 8th-inning run the rest of the way in a five-hit performance that was backed by three hits from Eddie Foster and two RBI from Sam Rice. [box]
