1919 AL - Games of Friday, 16 May

White Sox 9, Red Sox 2The early season barrage from the White Stockings continues as they sweep Boston in the three-game series with an easy 9-2 win. A four-run 4th set the tone, behind the first of Joe Jackson's two triples in the game (to give him an AL-leading five three-base hits on the season), and Chicago piled on with a pair in each of the next two innings to settle matters in favor of Red Faber, who allowed only one earned run in securing his third win in as many decisions. Happy Felsch knocked in three runs, and Harry Hooper had three hits for the Red Sox. [box]

1919 AL - Games of Thursday, 15 May

White Sox 8, Red Sox 7For the second straight day, nine innings were insufficient to separate the Sox in Chicago, but this time it was a wild affair that saw eleven runs scored in the final two innings of regulation play before the White Sox ended the game on Joe Jackson's game-winning single in the bottom of the 11th. Boston led 4-0 into the bottom of the 8th behind excellent hurling from Bullet Joe Bush, but Jackson's two-run triple got Chicago on the board as part of a three-run inning. The Red Sox responded with three of their own in the top of the 9th courtesy of RBI doubles from Harry Hooper and Amos Strunk, but Sad Sam Jones, on in relief for Boston in the 8th, could not hold on. With one out and a runner on first, the usually sure-handed Everett Scott muffed ground balls from two straight batters and Jackson took a pitch on the thigh with the bases full and two outs to close the score to 7-5. That brought up Happy Felsch, who grounded one into left to score Nemo Leibold and Eddie Collins to tie the game. In the home 11th, Buck Weaver led off the inning with a triple and scored one batter later on Jackson's hit. Jackson and Felsch knocked in seven runs between them, and both Strunk and Ossie Vitt had three hits for the Red Sox. [box]

1919 AL - Games of Wednesday, 14 May

Browns 7, Athletics 6George Sisler beat the throw home on Wally Gerber's ground ball to third base to complete a two-run 9th inning rally that shot the Browns past the As. St. Louis trailed 6-5 heading into their final at-bat, but Jack Tobin, Sisler and Baby Doll Jacobson singled in succession to start the inning, cut the lead to one, and chase Philadelphia starter Scott Perry from the game. Walt Kinney came on to pitch and Tad Sloan sacrificed Sisler to third and Jacobson to second. With one away and two men in scoring position, Sisler was off at the crack of the bat when Gerber (2-for-5, 3 RBI) rolled one to the left of A's third sacker Fred Thomas and the first baseman slid home well ahead of the throw. Jacobson had three hits, and Braggo Roth had three (including his third HR) for Philadelphia. [box]

1919 AL- Games of Tuesday, 13 May

Results from the 20th day of the 1919 American League season . . .

Tigers 6, Indians 5Bobby Veach and Harry Heilmann teamed up to create the go-ahed run in the 8th inning to decide a see-saw affair at Navin Field. The visiting Indians scored twice in the 1st on Elmer Smith's third home run of the season, but this was quickly answered by three in the bottom half behind triples by Veach and Ira Flagstead. Detroit led 5-2 when Cleveland strung together four singles and a Heilmann miscue to retake the lead in the 7th , but the home club immediately answered in their half behind Babe Ellison's RBI double. With Stan Coveleski on to start the 8th for Cleveland, Veach greeted him with a single and a swipe of second and then Heilmann singled up the middle to chase Veach across the plate. Cleveland got two men on base in the 9th, but Hooks Dauss got Larry Garnder to bounce into a game-ending 3-6-1 double play. Ray Chapman and Ira Flagstead each had three hits and Flagstead drove home three men as well. [box]

1919 AL - Games of Monday, 12 May

White Sox 8, Browns 7Joe Jackson's double in the bottom of the 9th capped off a furious late-inning Chicago comeback and sent Eddie Collins scampering home with the winning run in an 8-7 White Sox win. St. Louis had built up a formidable advantage in the early innings, thanks in large part to a pair of two-run triples by Baby Doll Jacobson in consecutive innings, and their lead reached 7-1 before Chicago managed to reach Bert Gallia for two runs in 5th. Two more scored in the 7th on productive outs from Buck Weaver and Collins, and things really got interesting when Swede Risberg and PH Fred McMullin drove in runs in the 8th to tie the contest at 7. Detroit put two men aboard against Red Faber with one away in the top of the 9th, but left them stranded, and it would end quickly in the bottom half. Buck Weaver led off with a base hit, but was caught trying to steal second. Collins then singled, and successfully swiped the extra bag before Jackson drove one to the fence in right-center for his second two-bagger of the game and a walk-off win. Hap Felsch had a double to extend his hitting streak to fifteen games, and George Sisler had three hits in a losing cause. [box]

1919 AL - Games of Sunday, 11 May

White Sox 8, Indians 4Everything came up "fives" in Cleveland today, as Joe Jackson recorded the first five-hit game of the season in the AL thus far, and Lefty Williams earned his fifth win of the season. The final fate of the contest was still in some doubt with the score 5-3 in favor of Chicago through six innings, but Jackson's fourth hit of the day was part of a three-run 7th inning that gave Williams all of the cushion he required to run his ledger to 5-0 on the young season. Hap Felsch knocked in three men with a double and a triple, and Joe Wood tripled twice for the home team. [box]

1919 AL - Games of Saturday, 10 May

Indians 7, White Sox 1Ray Chapman had four hits and scored twice as the Indians won easily at home against the first-place White Sox.  Chapman singled in each of the first two innings as Cleveland jumped out to a 3-0 lead, and then tripled to start a three-run 8th that put the game away, Johnny Enzmann was in complete control on the mound, allowing only six hits (three to Nemo Leibold) and one walk, and Doc Johnston also contributed three hits on the afternoon.  [box]
