1919 AL - Games of Wednesday, 21 May

Red Sox 12, Tigers 2The Red Sox pounded Detroit pitching for nineteen hits - four of them, and four RBI, from Babe Ruth - in a romp at Navin Field. Boston put together nine hits, including Ruth's seventh home run of the year, and three Tiger errors to score eight times in the 5th inning in support of Ray Caldwell (9 ip, 7 h, 2 er , 1 bb). Amos Strunk, Wally Schang and Stuffy McInnis each had three hits and Harry Hooper knocked in three as the Sox feasted on the deliveries of Rudy Kallio and George Cunningham. [box]

Browns 3, Red Sox 2: Pinch-runner Ray Demmitt beat the throw home on a ground ball to second to score the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning in St. Louis. It had been a tight, well-pitched affair throughout, with the Browns getting a run in the 1st on Baby Doll Jacobson's two-out single and Chicago answering in the 5th when Harry Hooper reached second on Jack Tobin's dropped fly ball and later scored on Babe Ruth's sacrifice fly. But that was it until the 9th inning as Ruth and Dave Davenport kept the scoresheet clean. The White Sox broke through in the 9th as Hooper singled, stoles second, advanced to third on Jack Barry's sacrifice and scored on Stuffy McInnis' high chopper to third with the bases loaded. But the Browns had some magic of their own in store - Allan Sothoron, on in relief of Davenport, led of the bottom of the 9th with a double down the right-field line, and was then replaced by PR Demmitt. A sagging Ruth was then pulled from the mound in favor of George Dumont, who allowed a single to Wally Gerber and then walked Josh Billings to load the bases with no outs. Earl Smith then pulled a weak ball on the ground to the right of second base which Jack Barry gamely stabbed and flung home, but Demmitt beat the one-hop throw with room to spare. Hooper scored a pair of runs for Boston, while George Sisler had two hits to raise his batting average to .388. [box]

Tigers 2, Nationals 1: Hooks Dauss pitched the Tigers to a tight win over the Nationals at home, allowing only a 3rd-inning run and retiring the final ten Washingtons to preserve Detroit's slim lead. A pair of runs in the bottom of the 1st on RBI from Bobby Veach and Harry Heilmann got the Tiger noses in front from the start and Dauss was up to the task, battling Doc Ayers to a string of empty frames over the final six innings. Mike Menosky and Donie Bush each reached base three times from the leadoff spots, but the Tigers made much better use of their six hits, half of which went for two bases. [box]

Browns 5, Red Sox 2Baby Doll Jacobson doubled and homered, and Carl Weilman allowed only four hits in a St. Louis home victory over the Red Sox. Jacobson homered to lead off the 2nd and then doubled home George Sialer in the 3rd to drive the Browns to the front, and Weilman was largely unbothered the rest of the way. He walked the first two men in the 6th to lead to two runs that gave Boston a little bit of hope, but retired the final seven men to close the door firmly. Joe Gedeon also had a pair of RBI for the Browns. [box]

1919 AL - Games of Saturday, 17 May

Nationals 11, Tigers 9Pinch-hitter Harry Thompson singled home two runs with two away in the top of the 11th inning as that Nationals averted disaster and won a wild affair in Detroit against the Tigers. Washington led 6-0 after only one inning, in part due to Joe Judge's three-run circuit clout, and the margin ballooned to 8-0 before St. Louis began to make headway with four runs in the 7th on three hits, two errors and a wild pitch. But it was still 9-4 for the Nats into the final inning and, in fact, with one out and no one aboard in that inning when the wheels came completely off of the cart for Jim Shaw. Three hits and a walk scored a run and loaded the bases before Walter Johnson came on in an attempt to stem the bleeding. But Harry Heilmann's grounder went through the legs of Howie Shanks at short and then Ira Flagstead drilled a three-run double past Mike Menosky in center field and the game was, incredibly, tied. Defense - or the lack of it, as there were seven errors in the field on the afternoon, played a key role in the winning rally as well. Patsy Gharrity led off the top of the 11th with a single and was bunted to second by Shanks before Joe Leonard drew a walk off of Bill James. James then got Val Picinich to roll one towards Babe Ellison at second, but Ellison couln not find the handle and the bases were full with one out. This brought Thompson off the bench to swing the bat for Johnson, and he singled to left to score two runs that would win the game. Molly Craft came on in the bottom of the 11th to retire the Tigers in order and end a long day at the ball park. Gharrity collected three hits, and Flagstead drove home three. [box]
