White Sox 4, Athletics 1: Chicago took advantage of of four Philadelphia errors, and Eddie Cicotte won for only the second time in five starts. The White Sox scored twice in the 6th to take the lead, helped by Fred Thomas' error, and added an insurance score the following frame after George Burns booted a ground ball to begin the inning. Cicotte (12-6) was back to his dominant self; after allowing a run in the 3rd on Cy Perkins' triple and a single by Whitey Witt, he set down seventeen of the next eighteen A's to cruise to a complete-game five-hitter. Perkins and Happy Felsch had two hits apiece, and Scott Perry (3-11) took the fall for his club's poor defensive performance. [box]
Indians 9, Yankees 1: Joe Wood drove in four runs and Tris Speaker scored three times to support sharp pitching by Jim Bagby as Cleveland won easily at home. The Indians got on top of New York immediately as Ernie Shore (1-5) posed no mystery out of the gate - two of the first three Cleveland hitters tripled and the home team piled up six runs on five hits and four walks in the first two innings. Meanwhile, Bagby (7-9) got better as the contest moved on and finished in dominant fashion, retiring thirteen of the last fourteen Yanks to put it away. [box]
