1919 AL - Games of Monday, 30 June

Athletics 5, Nationals 1: Tom Rogers allowed only one run while his teammates conjured five runs from only three hits to win at home. Almost all of the Athletic damage came in a 2nd inning which featured only two hits, but also two walks, a hit batsman and an error; but one of those hits was a three-run home run off the bat of Merlin Kopp that would be the last hit Philadelphia would manage against Dick Robertson (3-1) until Rogers himself homered in the 8th. On the mound, Rogers (6-4) held Washington scoreless until the 9th when Howie Shanks dropped one into the left field seats with the Nats down to their final out. Clyde Milan had three of Washington's eight base hits. [box]

White Sox 8, Indians 0: Eddie Cicotte (11-4) shut down Cleveland on three hits and got seventeen hits of support from his teammates as Chicago won easily. The White Sox blew the game open with a four-run 3rd inning in which they strung together six singles off of Jim Bagby (6-7). With the game comfortably in Cicotte's control, the Chicago hurler showed off his prowess with the stick by doubling in the 6th and 7th innings as CHI padded their lead. The White Sox offense was led by three hits from Joe Jackson and Ray Schalk, and Nemo Leibold scored three times. [box]

Yankees 10, Red Sox 6: Wally Pipp homered and drove in three runs to help New York build a big early lead and the Yankees held on to win. Pipp's long drive in the 1st inning gave the Yankees a 3-0 lead and a two-run double by Del Pratt in the 3rd helped them extend that to 6-0. Boston made an effort to chip away, scoring twice in the 4th and the 6th, but each time New York answered with two of their own. Bob Shawkey (8-6) managed to go the distance, and Pratt had three RBI; Bill Lamar had four hits for Boston, while Babe Ruth doubled twice. [box]

Yankees 6, Red Sox 5: Ping Bodie raced home when Herb Pennock's breaking ball skipped past Wally Schang and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 9th to give New York a doubleheader sweep of Boston at the Polo Grounds. A two-run single by Ossie Vitt and RBI double by Bae Ruth gave Boston a 5-3 lead in the 4th inning, but a hit batsman, double, passed ball and RBI single from Roger Peckinpaugh knotted the game back up one inning later. And there mattters rested until the final frame. Bodie led off against Pennock (2-5) with a single and was sacrificed to second by Truck Hannah. After PH Chick Fewster hit a slow grounder to short that allowed Bodie to move to third, Sammy Vick stepped to the plate and took a wide one for a ball before Pennock bounced one past the catcher to decide the game. Peckinpaugh had three hits and Babe Ruth reached base four times for Boston. [box]

Browns 5, Tigers 2: Wally Gerber's 6th-inning double broke a 2-2 tie and helped St. Louis to a win at Sportsman's Park. With two outs and Jack Tobin at first, Earl Smith singled to set the stage for Gerber's two-base hit and Gerber then scored on a wild pitch and Hank Severeid's single. Dave Davenport (2-5) made those runs stand up, allowing only two hits over the final three innings to close the deal. Donie Bush scored both Detroit runs. [box]
