1919 AL - Games of Saturday, 2 August

Results of the games played on the 100th day of the 1919 American League season . . .

Indians 6, Nationals 4: Despite being outhit by a count of thirteen to seven, Cleveland took advantage of their opportunities (and some help from the Nationals) to outscore Washington in front of their home crowd in D.C. The Indians scored twice on Eric Erickson (4-6) wild pitches in the 4th, and pushed across runs in both the 6th and 7th that initially reached base due to fielding errors. Elmer Myers was in regular difficulty on the hill for Cleveland, but Washington struggled to come up with the big hit and Myers (8-1) somehow survived thirteen hits and five walks, loaded the bases with one out in the 9th for drama, to pitch a complete game. Buzz Murphy had three hits for the Nationals. [box]

White Sox 5, Red Sox 1: Eddie Cicotte throttled back the Boston offense, and the left side of Chicago's infield had six hits as the White Sox dispatched the Red at Fenway Park. The visitors would get all of the runs they needed in the early innings, scoring four times in the first four frames on seven hits against Paul Musser (3-1). Cicotte allowed a run in the 4th when Ossie Vitt belted a leadoff triple and scored on Braggo Roth's single, but Cicotte (16-7) would set down twelve in a row starting that inning and would not allow a single Bostonian to reach second base outside of that stanza. Buck Weaver had three hits, as did Fred McMullin, and they collected three two-baggers between them. [box]

White Sox 6, Red Sox 2: Chicago took control with four runs in the 4th inning, and Lefty Williams won his League-leading 18th decision to sweep the doubleheader from the Red Sox in Boston. After the first two Chicagos had reach in the 4th against Herb Pennock (5-9), RBI hits followed from Happy Felsch and Swede Risberg and Fred McMullin lofted a sacrifice fly; after a Pennock wild pitch, Ray Schalk grounded out to bring home another tally. Boston scored in their half of the 4th after Babe Ruth's leadoff double to make it 4-2, but Williams (18-8) then retired fourteen of the next sixteen while Chicago was stretching their lead. Buck Weaver had another three hits, giving him a six-hit day, and Shano Collins singled three times and scored twice from the top of the White Sox order. [box]

Yankees 5, Tigers 2: Roger Peckinpaugh hit a two-run home run to break a 2-2 tie and Jack Quinn held Detroit off the scoreboard from there as New York won at home. Peckinpaugh's fifth long ball of the year came after Chick Fewster had begun the inning with a single against Dutch Leonard (6-8). Quinn (11-10) would put a pair of Tigers aboard in the 6th and again in the 9th, but he recorded six of the final seven outs on ground balls to finish the game. Harry Heilmann had three hits and Bobby Veach two doubles for the visitors, while Fewster and Ping Bodie each had three hits for the Yanks. [box]

Browns 2, Athletics 1: Allen Sothoron pitched a five-hitter and also delivered the key hit as St. Louis sent Philadelphia down to defeat. Sothoron and Tom Rogers (6-10) were on their "A" games at Shibe Park, with the game scoreless through five innings before three singles gave St. Louis the lead in the top of the 6th, and two walks and two singles allowed the A's to tie the score again in the bottom half of the inning. Neither club looked like scoring again until Wally Gerber led off the 9th with a base hit and moved to second on Rogers' wild pitch and third on a groundout; this brought Sothoron (10-10) to the plate and and grounded one through the closed-in infield to score Gerber and grab the lead for the Browns. The Ohio spitballer then came out for the bottom of the 9th and quickly put the A's away on two strikeouts and a fly ball to lock up the win. Baby Doll Jacobson had three hits for the Browns, but they also hit into four double plays on the afternoon. [box]
