1919 AL - Games of Wednesday, 16 July

Yankees 13, Browns 4: Wally Pipp had four hits and Frank Baker had two homers and four RBI as New York got out quickly and then buried St. Louis for good under a pile of late-inning runs. Four runs in the 4th inning (Bob Shawkey 2-run double) had put the Yankees on top 6-2, and then three in the 7th, two more in the 8th (Pipp two-run homer) and one for good measure in the 9th completed the damage. Ken Williams has three hits for the Browns, and Hank Severeid a pair of two-baggers, but otherwise Shawkey (10-9) had all of the help he needed. [box]

White Sox 7, Nationals 2: Chicago broke out with three runs in the 6th inning to beat Washington to the finish line at Comiskey Park. Buck Weaver's force out had given them a 3-2 lead in the 5th then, with two outs in the 6th three walks, two singles and a passed ball produced the runs that decided the contest. Eddie Collins had three hits and his twentieth stolen base of the season and Weaver and Joe Jackson each drove home a pair in support of Grover Lowdermilk (4-2), who pitched around five bases on balls to go the distance. Indians 6, Red Sox 3: Larry Gardner and Jack Graney each had two-run hits in the early going as Cleveland cruised to a win at home. Gardner singled home two in the 1st and Graney doubled with the bases full in the 4th as the Indians jumped out to a 6-0 lead, and Elmer Myers (6-1) was in complete control other than an 8th where the Sox clumped together four singles to produce three runs. Stan Coveleski pitched a scoreless 9th to button it down for the home club. [box]

Tigers 11, Athletics 6: Detroit scored nine times in the 2nd inning to overwhelm Philadelphia at Navin Field. The Tigers came to the plate in the 2nd trailing 1-0 on Tillie Walker's RBI single in the opening frame, but the first seven men reached base against Jing Johnson (5-8) on three singles and four walks; after a sharp lineout, two singles, a walk and a Whitey Witt error followed and the rout was on. Howard Ehmke (7-12) wasn't overpowering for Detroit, but he held the A's in check other than a three-unearned-run outburst in the 5th and managed to complete the game despite allowing ten hits. Chick Shorten had four singles to lead the Tiger attack, and he was ably assisted by Cobb (three hits, two runs, two RBI) and Heilmann (three hits, run, RBI). [box]
