1919 AL - Games of Monday, 11 August

Athletics 3, Tigers 0: Rollie Naylor spun a five-hitter and Philadelphia broke open a scoreless tie late in the game to win at home. The game was nothing but zeroes for five innings as Naylor and Hooks Dauss matched wits, but the A's got on the board in the 6th when Merlin Kopp's leadoff double set up George Burns' RBI single with two outs. Cy Perkins doubled home a second in the 7th and Tillie Walker hit a solo home run (9) in the 8th while Naylor was slicing through the Tigers lineup. Detroit only had two hits after the 4th inning, and Naylor sent the last eleven men back to the Detroit dugout with the bat in their hands. [box]

Red Sox 10, Browns 1: Boston scored ten times on thirteen singles and five walks, and Herb Pennock threw a gem to lead the home team over St. Louis. The Red Sox put affairs to rest fairly early in this one, scoring seven runs in the first two innings against an ineffective Allen Sothoron (11-11); the big hits were two-run singles off the sticks of Stuffy McInnis in the 1st and Babe Ruth in the 2nd. The Browns did get one run in the 4th with the assistance of a Wally Schang passed ball, but Boston got two more in the bottom half on another two-run single, this time by Everett Scott. And that was that for St. Louis - Pennock only allowed them one hit after the 5th inning, and retired eight of the final nine. Scott had three RBI and Braggo Roth had three hits and crossed the plate three times. [box]

Yankees 5, Indians 3: The New York keystone combination of Chick Fewster and Del Pratt combined for six hits, two runs and two RBI as the Yanks defeated Cleveland in New York. The big city boys cracked open a 1-1 tie when they scored three times in the 3rd inning on four consecutive base hits, including a Pratt RBI double, and Jack Quinn (13-10) held the Indians quiet until Steve O'Neill's homer (1) with a man aboard in the 8th brought the visitors back to within two runs. But the experienced right-hander held his nerve when Cleveland loaded the bases with one out in the 9th after an error by Wally Pipp, and got the hot-hitting Larry Gardner to pop up on the infield and Bill Wambsganss to ground into a force out to end the game. O'Neill had three hits. [box]

White Sox 2, Nationals 0: Lefty Williams got the better of Harry Harper in a low-scoring affair that saw the two teams combine to hit a cool 3-for-19 with runners in scoring position and leave twenty men on base. Chicago scored the first run in the 5th when Danny Silva booted Shano Collins' ground ball with Ray Schalk on third, and Chick Gandil's triple in the 8th provided Williams () with an insurance run that he would turn out not to need. He wriggled free of of first-and-third one-out jam in the 7th courtesy of a Joe Judge GIDP, and from a two-on, no out situation in the bottom of the 9th to complete the shutout and win his nineteenth game of the season. Collins had three hits and Sam Rice was the only National with two safeties. [box]
