1919 AL - Games of Sunday, 24 August

Red Sox 4, Tigers 3: Stuffy McInnis' third hit of the game sent Babe Ruth home from second with the go-ahead run in the 11th inning as Boston edged Detroit. The Sox trailed 2-1 going into their final at-bat, but McInnis followed an intentional pass to Ruth with two out and Harry Hooper on second with a double to center field that scored both men. The Tigers, however, got a pinch-hit home run from Ira Flagstead with two outs in the bottom of the 9th to stave off defeat, albeit temporarily. With two away in the 11th, Ruth doubled and McInnis singled him home and Bob McGraw (1-2) then finished off 2.1 innings of scoreless relief work by retiring Cobb for the final out with the Ty-ing run at first base. White Sox 4, Yankees 2: The lower order powered Chicago past New York, as Chick Gandil had three hits and Swede Risberg drove home the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly. The score was tied at one apiece when Risberg batted in the 6th with the bases loaded and one away, and he lofted a ball to deep center field which allowed Joe Jackson to tag up and score easily. Buck Weaver doubled home an insurance run the next inning but Sammy Vick's leadoff triple led to a NY run in the 8th; Chicago extended the lead again in the bottom half when Hap Felsch led off against Jack Quinn (15-11) with a home run, and Lefty Williams (22-9) got Truck Hannah to bounce into a game-ending double play to secure the victory. Indians 6, Athletics 5: Jack Graney had three hits and Joe Harris drove in three runs to lead Cleveland over Philadelphia. When the Indians scored twice in the 4th and in the 6th (Ray Chapman with an RBI single in each inning) to take a 6-2 lead, the outcome seemed to be pretty safe, but the A's scored twice in the 7th and once in the 8th to close to within a single run before Ray Caldwell (3-10) set them down in order in the 9th inning. Browns 8, Nationals 2: A five-run explosion in the 6th inning left Washington behind as St. Louis ran away to victory. With SLA ahead by a score of 3-1 after five, Nationals starter Tom Zachary (1-3) fell to pieces in the 6th - the first four men reached and two scored before he was lifted, then a passed ball, a double and a groundout produced three more runs and the Browns were on their way. Lefty Leifield (6-1) allowed eleven hits, but spaced them well and stranded nine Nats in addition to stroking two base hits and scoring twice. [box]
