1919 AL - Games of Wednesday, 4 June

Nationals 9, Red Sox 1: Mike Menosky, the AL's leading hitter, kept up his torrid pace with two hits and three RBI, including the opening runs of the game and Dick Robertson did the rest. The 28-year old righthander allowed only one hit over the first seven innings and pitched into the 9th until he needed a bit of help from Charlie Whitehouse to finish off the Sox. Menosky, now batting a gaudy .424, doubled in two runs in the 3rd, and singled in a run and scored himself in the 4th to help the Nats build an 8-0 lead. Joe Judge, Sam Rice and Howie Shanks also had two hits apiece for Washington. [box]

Yankees 5, Athletics 4: Roger Peckinpaugh and Duffy Lewis homered and New York took advantage of eight free passes from Philadelphia pitching to squeeze past the Athletics by a run. Lewis' two-run four-bagger in the 1st got the Yanks started and Peckinpaugh's solo homer in the 5th leveled matters after the A's had rallied for three runs of their own. The next five Yanks then reached base - three via walks - to enable two more to score  for a 5-3 edge; the As got one back right away, but Luke Nelson stiffened on the mound for NY and allowed just a single hit over the final three innings. Peckinpaugh reached base a total of four times and Tillie Walker had a triple and two RBI for Philadelphia. [box]
