1919 AL Players of the Month - April/May

The Batter and Pitcher of the Month in the American League for the opening month of the 1919 season are (* denotes League-leading total) . . .

Batter of the Month

Babe Ruth, BOS: Even for casual observers of the early returns in the American League, there would have been little suspense in the selection of the circuit's best batter for the first month; the 24 year-old pitcher/slugger of the Red Sox has taken a torch to the sports pages over the season's first turn of the calendar, batting at a 400/490/832* clip and belting a League-leading seven home runs. Only the rest he has been afforded in order to support his double duty on the mound (30.1 ip in five appearances, with a win and a save) has kept him from leading the AL in even more offensive categories, yet he still amassed 17 extra-base hits, 16 bases on balls and 24 RBI in only 22 games.

Honorable mentions: Braggo Roth, PHA (407/434/685, 3rd in batting, 2nd in slugging); Harry Heilmann, DET (415/452/653, 2nd in batting, 3rd in on-base, 3rd in slugging, 49* h, 12* 2b); Mike Menosky, WAS (434*/520*/530)

Pitcher of the Month

Eddie Cicotte, CHA: The White Sox knuckleballer has been nearly invincible in the first month, going 7*-1 with a 1.23 ERA in nine starts (with 8 CG) for the league-leading Chicagos. In 88* ip, he allowed only 71 hits and 14 walks, and has struck out 32 batters.

Honorable mentions: Red Faber, CHA (5-1, 2.20, 45 ip, 45 h, 8 bb, 14 so); Walter Johnson, WAS (4-2 with 1 sv, 2.32, 54.1 ip, 52 h, 8 bb, 27 so in eight appearances); Johnny Enzmann, CLE (2-0, 0.61*, 29.1 ip, 21 h, 2 bb, 19 so in four appearances)
