1919 AL - Games of Saturday, 31 May

Browns 3, Tigers 2: Herman Bronkie had four hits, and Baby Doll Jacobson (3-for-4, 3 RBI) walloped a key two-run double to push the Browns past the Detroits at Navin Field. The Tigers had taken a 2-1 lead in the first on RBIs from Ty Cobb and Bobby Veach, but Bronkie led off the 5th with a single and he and Jack Tobin, who had walked, moved into scoring position on George Sisler's groundout. That set the table for Jacobson's two-bagger down the left field line which put St. Louis in front. Bert Gallia was money in the bank the rest of the way, benefitting from two double plays that kept traffic on the base paths in check. Ty Cobb had a pair of hits, including a double, a run batted in and a stolen base. [box]

Red Sox 4, Athletics 1: Bill James tossed a three-hitter and Mike McNally had three hits and two RBI as Boston stifled Philadelphia in front of a quiet home crowd. James, making his first start since being purchased by the club from Detroit a week ago, held the A's to one hit over the first five innings while Boston was taking the lead on Harry Hooper's 5th-inning RBI single off of Jing Johnson. Philadelphia got to James for a run in the 6th, thanks to Braggo Roth's triple, but James then set down twelve of the last thirteen Athletics while his teammates were scoring three decisive runs in the 8th on McNally's two-RBI double and Wally Schang's run-scoring single. Hooper and Everett Scott had two hits each for Boston. [box]

White Sox 4, Indians 3: Nemo Leibold doubled, walked twice, stole two bases and scored twice to spark the White Sox to a one-run win over the Indians at Comiskey Park. The visitors were leading 3-2 into the bottom of the 5th when Leibold walked with one away, stole second and went to third on Steve O'Neill's wild throw and scored on Buck Weaver's game-tying base hit. Eddie Cicotte went out and got himself an insurance run the following inning when he singled Chick Gandil home with two outs, and then pitched a clean final third of the contest to earn his AL-leading seventh victory. Ray Chapman had three hits and swiped a bag for Cleveland. [box]

Nationals 5, Yankees 4: Val Picinich hit a sacrifice fly to left field that enabled Mike Menosky to score the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as Washington beat New York despite giving back all of an early lead in the game and committing four errors. The Yankees had rallied from 4-0 down with two runs in the 7th and two more in the 8th, tying the game when PH Aaron Ward singled home Ping Bodie with two outs in the latter inning. The home team put two men aboard on the home 9th, but Bob Shawkey wriggled free; that would not happen in the 10th. Menosky - with three more hits to raise his League-leading average to .434 - singled to start it off and moved to second on Sam Rice's base hit. Buzz Murphy bunted both men over and Howie Shanks was then intentionally walked. Picinich then skied a ball to Duffy Lewis, but the NY outfielder could not get his throw home ahead of Menosky and the Nationals had won. [box]
