1919 AL - Games of Thursday, 22 May

Yankees 6, White Sox 4A four-run outburst in the top of the 9th inning turned the game upside-down and gave the Yankees a win at Comiskey Park. Jack Quinn and Lefty Williams had locked horns in a pretty good pitcher's duel which had seemed to finally tilt in the White Sox's favor when Joe Jackson led off the bottom of the 8th with a single, advanced to second on a groundout, and scored on Swede Risberg's two-out base hit to give Chicago a 3-2 lead. But Williams couldn't finish off the New Yorkers, walking Duffy Lewis to start the inning before allowing four consecutive one-out singles that produced three runs and a Yankee lead. Frank Baker's insurance-run single proved important when Chicago scored one in the bottom of the 9th off of Allen Russell, but the NY reliever got Hap Felsch to ground slowly to first with the tying run on second to end the game. Baker had three hits and two RBI, while Jackson and Nemo Leibold added three hits each to the losing cause. [box]

Tigers 10, Red Sox 6: The heart of the Tiger lineup destroyed Boston pitching to the tune of 10-for-15 with 7 RBI as Detroit won an eventful affair at home. The home club jumped out to a 5-0 lead when Bobby Veach homered in the 1st and singled home another in the 2nd, but the Sox narrowed the gap to 5-3 with run-scoring outs in the 3rd and 4th innings. Harry Heilmann's triple led to another DET run in the 5th, and the Tigers grew the gap in the following frame when an error and five consecutive singles pushed three more runs across the plate. Boston made a little noise in the 8th, but Bernie Boland came off the bench to pitch the final 1.2 innings  and secure the victory. Veach knocked in four runs, and Heilmann had four hits. [box]

Athletics 5, Indians 2Walt Kinney allowed but five hits, and two-run hits from Jimmy Dugan and Fred Thomas sparked a four-run 8th inning that propelled Philadelphia to a road win. Stan Coveleski's RBI single had given Cleveland the lead in the bottom of the 7th but, after Coveleski had retired the leadoff hitter in the 8th, the As rapped five straight hits to grab the lead away. Kinney was then clean over the final two innings to ensure a rare win away from home for the Athletics. Braggo Roth and Tillie Walker had three hits each for the winners. [box]

Browns 5, Nationals 4George Sisler and Baby Doll Jacobson got out the big bats to drive the Browns to a hard-fought win over Walter Johnson and Washington. Sisler tripled and scored in the 1st to give St. Louis the lead and, after the Nationals had gone in front, he tripled again in front of Jacobson's double to provide the ooomph to a four-run inning that put the Browns back in front to stay. Bert Gallia made it stick over the final three innings, despite surrendering a 9th-inning home run to light-hitting Hal Janvrin. [box]
