1919 AL - Games of Sunday, 25 May

Athletics 4, Tigers 1Tom Rogers tied the Tigers in knots for nine innings, the incandescent Braggo Roth had three hits and Tillie Walker knocked in two runs as the A's suffocated Detroit at Navin Field. Rogers did not strike out a single batter but pitched artfully around seven hits and three walks, allowing but a single first-inning score. Philadelphia got that back on George Burns' home run the next inning, and then took the lead two innings later on Walker's run-scoring groundout, and stretched the edge in the 6th when Walker doubled home another and then scored on Joe Dugan's base hit. Rogers got a double play to escape some trouble in the 8th and then retired Donie Bush on a routine fly ball to center for the final out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th. [box]

Nationals 6, White Sox 5: Sam Rice and Patsy Gharrity knocked in a pair of runs apiece as Washington built up a substantial lead, and the Nats then (barely) held off a furious White Sox rally to win in Chicago by the slimmest of margins. The visitors led 6-1 through seven innings on the back of Rice's two-run single in the 5th and Gharrity's two-run double in the 7th and Jim Shaw was rolling through the White Sox hitters until he lost his feel in the final frame. Three free passes to the first four batters set the stage for a three-run double by Joe Jackson that put the tying run in scoring position, but Shaw retired Happy Felsch and Chick Gandil (who each had two hits) to leave Jackson stranded at second. [box]

Red Sox 5, Indians 3Babe Ruth singled with the bases loaded and two out in the top of the 10th inning to plate the runs that gave Boston a win over Cleveland. PH Wally Schang drew a one-out walk off of Jim Bagby and, after the second out, Ossie Vitt singled and Amos Strunk walked to fill the sacks. That brought lefty Fritz Coumbe to the hill to face Ruth, but to no avail, as the slugger ripped a line drive to right to score the decisive two runs. Bill James came on in the bottom of the inning to set the Tribe down on one hit. and avoid a disheartening loss for the Red Sox who had left 15 men on base and hit 5-for-19 with runners in scoring position. Bill Wambsganss had two hits, a double and an RBI for Cleveland, but also committed two errors. [box]

Browns 10, Yankees 3St. Louis took full advantage of an afternoon of wayward Yankee deliveries to pile up nine runs in the first four innings and win easily at home. New York pitchers walked nine men, four of whom came around to score, and Browns batters knocked twelve hits and kept the runners moving with four sacrifice bunts. Tad Sloan walked three times and four other Browns had both two hits and two runs batted in, while Ping Bodie had three hits for the New Yorkers. George Mogridge had a very short afternoon on the mound for the visitors, allowing twelve baserunners before departing in the 3rd inning. [box]
