1919 AL - Games of Monday, 19 May

Tigers 2, Nationals 1: Hooks Dauss pitched the Tigers to a tight win over the Nationals at home, allowing only a 3rd-inning run and retiring the final ten Washingtons to preserve Detroit's slim lead. A pair of runs in the bottom of the 1st on RBI from Bobby Veach and Harry Heilmann got the Tiger noses in front from the start and Dauss was up to the task, battling Doc Ayers to a string of empty frames over the final six innings. Mike Menosky and Donie Bush each reached base three times from the leadoff spots, but the Tigers made much better use of their six hits, half of which went for two bases. [box]

Indians 5, Yankees 1Jim Bagby held New York to a single first-inning run and Tris Speaker knocked in three as the resurgent Indians put away the Yankees at League Park. The visitors got on the board straightaway when Sammy Vick led off with a base hit, was bunted to second by Roger Peckinpaugh, and scored on Wally Pipp's single. But that would be it on the afternoon for the Gothams, who only managed to put two runners on base twice for the remainder of the contest. The Cleveland lineup was slower to get going, but when Speaker singled to score two with two away in the 5th to give them the lead they had what they needed to win. RBI doubles from Jack Graney and Speaker were the key in a three-run 7th that put the game to bed as Bagby retired seventeen of the final twenty Yanks to bring home the win. Graney reached base three times and scored twice, while Bagby was busy on the basepaths as well, crossing the dish twice. [box]
