1919 AL - Games of Monday, 16 June

Tigers 8, Nationals 1: Ty Cobb ran roughshod over Washington at Griffith Stadium, smacking two triples among his four hits and stealing home for what turned out to the winning run of the game. The Nationals struck first in their opening half-inning when Joe Judge led off with a single, advanced to third on a sacrifice and a groundout, and scored on Sam Rice's deep fly ball. But Cobb flashed his formidable gifts in the 3rd; after Ralph Young had led off with a walk against Harry Harper (1-8) and had been bunted to second base, Cobb ripped a drive to center field that scored Young and went for three bases. One batter later, Cobb sprinted for home while Harry Heilmann was at the plate and beat Harper's throw home for the steal that gave Detroit a 2-1 lead. It turned out that there was plenty more to come for the Tigers, scoring two in the 4th and two more in the 7th, and Cobb tripled again in the 8th and scored the team's final run. Bernie Boland (7-1) shut the Nats down after their early run, allowing six hits and one walk despite Clyde Milan's three hits. [box]

Indians 2, Red Sox 1: Cleveland scored singles runs in the 9th and 10th innings to back the three-hit pitching of Stan Coveleski and steal one from the Red Sox. Boston had taken a 1-0 lead when Babe Ruth led off the bottom of the 2nd with his League-leading eighth home run of the season and Coveleski and Carl Mays had put an end to the scoring from that point forward; Boston would collect only an Ossie Vitt single from the 3rd inning on while Mays (4-4) was scattering ten hits and three walks. But he could only walk the tightrope so far - in the top of the 9th Larry Gardner walked with one out and then Bill Wambsganss doubled him home to tie the game and, in the 10th, Coveleski led off with a single and scored on two-out singles from Tris Speaker and Elmer Smith. Coveleski (5-5) was spotless in extra innings to secure the win. [box]

Yankees 7, Browns 4: Four St. Louis errors (three by Wally Gerber) led to five unearned runs that were the difference as New York won at home. Frank Baker followed the first error, by STL starter Bert Gallia (4-5), with a two-rum homer that opened the scoring and then Gerber miscues in the 3rd and 6th jump-started rallies that have the Yanks a 7-3 lead. Baby Doll Jacobson had a single, double and triple and Wally Pipp singled four times for New York, while Bob Shawkey (6-5) pitched a complete game for the win. [box]

White Sox 4, Athletics 2: Lefty Williams struck out eight in a route-going performance and Eddie Collins homered for the first time as Chicago triumphed in Philadelphia. The Sox led 3-1 when Collins started the 5ht inning with a circuit clout off of Socks Seibold (2-1) and Williams (8-4) brought the game home from there, holding Philadelphia scoreless over the final three innings. Tillie Walker homered for the A's and Joe Dugan had three hits. [box]
