1919 AL - Games of Saturday, 14 June

Nationals 1, Tigers 0: Jim Shaw beguiled the Tigers' potent offense, allowing them only three hits without issuing a free pass and fanning only one. Other than the three hits, Shaw only allowed Detroit to hit five balls out of the infield on the afternoon, coaxing a variety of routine grounders and pop-ups that enabled him to make short work of his opposition. And that level of dominance turned out to be necessary, as Dutch Leonard was spinning a gem of his own as he surrendered but four hits and a walk. But Detroit's biggest mistake of the afternoon came at the worst time - after Eddie Foster had singled with one out in the 6th and moved to third on a groundout and a wild pitch, Babe Ellison could not come up with Sam Rice's ground ball to his left and Foster scored the only tally of the game. That was always going to be enough for Shaw, who set down nineteen of the final twenty Tigers to close out a masterful performance. [box]

Red Sox 6, Indians 5: After tying the game at five in the bottom of the 9th on an RBI single, Harry Hooper doubled home Frank Gilhooley in the bottom of the 11th inning to end a back-and-forth affair at Fenway Park. Hooper's four-hit afternoon also included a single that drove in Boston's first run of the game in the 3rd and an RBI triple which ignited a rally that tied the game in the 4th. The Indians nosed ahead in the 8th when Ray Chapman walked, stole second and took third on Wally Schang's throwing error (Schang also had two passed balls on the day), and scored on Tris Speaker's ground out. With one away in the 11th Gilhooley singled off of Johnny Enzmann (2-2), and moved to second when Dave Shean rapped a slow bounder to short, before Hooper capped off his big day by lining a pitch down the right-field line to send Gilhooley home with the winning run. Browns 6, Yankees 5: Joe Gedeon had four hits and three runs batted in and Allen Sothoron went the distance, surviving a furious 9th-inning New York rally, to lead St. Louis over the Yankees. Gedeon singled home the first St. Louis run in the 3rd, tripled home their third in the 5th and singled home the last (and eventual margin of victory) in the 6th. Sothoron (4-6) had held New York scoreless on seven hits through eight innings, but he almost didn't survive the 9th - four of the first five Yanks reached base and Wally Pipp's two-out single scored a pair of runs that cut the Brown bulge to a single run. But he enticed Del Pratt to ground one to first base and the hopes of the Polo Grounds crowd were dashed. Sammy Vick, Roger Peckinpaugh and Truck Hannah each had two hits for the home team. [box]

White Sox 6, Athletics 2: Eddie Cicotte won for the ninth time in eleven decisions as fielding errors helped doom the Athletics to defeat at home. Errors at every infield position other then third base helped the White Sox score four unearned runs on their way to a 6-0 lead by the 6th inning, and Cicotte (9-2) survived a five-hit hiccup in the bottom of the 6th before retiring the last seven Philadelphias. Nemo Leibold had two bits and two RBI, and  Eddie Collins singled twice, walked and stole a base. [box]
