1919 AL - Games of Saturday, 21 June

Tigers 4, Athletics 0: Bernie Boland outlasted Scott Perry in a pitchers' duel that saw the game remain scoreless for six innings before Detroit rode the power bats of Ira Flagstead and Harry Heilmann to victory. Flagstead led off the 7th with a home run off of Perry (2-8), his third of the season, and Detroit tacked on another when Ben Dyer reached on Red Shannon's error, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Oscar Stanage's single. In the 8th, after a walk to Bobby Veach, Heilmann laced a triple and scored himself when Flagstead cracked a base hit. Boland (8-1) was rarely challenged and retired ten of the final eleven A's after his teammates had given him a lead with which to work. [box]

Yankees 8, Indians 4: Duffy Lewis doubled twice and drove home three runs to lead New York to a relatively easy win at the Polo Grounds. The Yankees were on Guy Morton from the beginning, putting three hits and two walks together for three runs in the 1st, Lewis scoring two with a double. In the 3rd, Del Pratt hit a sac fly and Ping Bodie tripled home another and, by the time the 9th inning arrived, they had been distanced by a score of 8-2. Doc Johnston tripled home a pair int he top of the 9th for some small consolation against Hank Thormahlen (5-5) but even the home crowd had lost interest in the contest by that juncture. [box]

Nationals 4, White Sox 3: Walter Johnson outlasted Red Faber and Val Picinich drove home the winning run with a 7th-inning triple as Washington squeaked by the White Sox at Griffith Stadium. The two teams traded scoring blows with the Nats leading twice only to see the Sox tie it back up, the second time on Nemo Leibold's RBI double in the top of the 7th. But, in the bottom half of that inning, Sam Rice walked with one away and then flew home ahead of Picinich's long drive to left-center. Johnson (8-4) wasn't at his overpowering best, but he took that lead and defended it gamely, escaping a second-and-third one-out jam in the 8th to retire the final five Chicagos. [box]
