1919 AL - Games of Tuesday, 10 June

Browns 14, Athletics 8: In a day of big innings at Shibe Park, St. Louis had the bigger ones and outlasted the A's. It looked a like a Philadelphia cakewalk early on, as the home club scored four times in the 1st and four more times in the 3rd (six straight singles to start the stanza) against Dave Davenport to take a large early lead, but the Browns got half of those back in their next at-bat and then exploded for six runs in the 6th against Jing Johnson (3-4) to jump ahead. In the 7th, Wally Mayer drove in two runs with a single, and Jimmy Austin tripled and scored, as they tacked on another four runs to create some breathing space. The Browns' relief corps were the stars of the afternoon, as Allen Sothoron (3-6) relieved Davenport and threw six innings of one-hit baseball before Rasty Wright tossed a scoreless 9th. [box]

White Sox 6, Red Sox 1: It was "Steady Eddie Day" at Fenway Park as Cicotte pitched a four-hit complete game for his 8th win, and Collins singled, homered and drove in three runs. Cicotte and Babe Ruth (1-4) were pitching to a stalemate before the Red Sox scored a run in the 5th on Del Gainer's RBI groundout, but Chicago took advantage of Ossie Vitt's fielding error in the 6th to score twice to take the lead. It was still 2-1 when Collins came to the plate with two on and one away in the 7th and laced a deep drive to left-center that allowed him to circle the bases before the sphere could be retrieved by the Boston defense. At that point, it was child's play for Cicotte (8-2), who allowed only one hit over the final four innings and brushed aside nine of the final ten Red Sox. Hap Felsch, Ray Schalk and Cicotte each also had a pair of Chicago's eleven hits and Wally Schang reached base three times for the home team. [box]

Tigers 6, Yankees 4: Ty Cobb and Bobby Veach started the 9th inning with back-to-back three-base hits and Detroit scored twice to win at the last call at the Polo Grounds. The home team had just tied the game at four in the bottom of the 8th when Wally Pipp doubled, stole third, and scored after Harry Heilmann couldn't handle Ping Bodie's ground ball behind the bag at first. George Mogridge (0-4) had gotten the final two outs in the top of the 8th without incident, but wouldn't find the same success in the 9th - Cobb started things off with his second triple of the game and then Veach immediately followed with his second of the game to put the Tigers in front. One out later, Ira Flagstead singled Veach home and Bernie Boland (6-1) closed matters out without undue anxiety in the bottom of the inning. Sammy Vick and Truck Hannah had two hits apiece for New York. [box]

Indians 5, Nationals 0: Jim Bagby shut out Washington on seven hits and Larry Gardner drove in three runs with a single, double and triple to lead Cleveland. Gardner plated the visitors' first runs with a two-run double in the 1st, and their last with an RBI single in the 9th and then it was all Bagby. He didn't allow more than one hit in any inning until the 9th, when he escaped from a second-and-third one-out pickle to keep the shutout intact. Ray Chapman and Tris Speaker each chipped in two hits. [box]
