1919 AL - Games of Wednesday, 11 June

Tigers 1, Yankees 0: Dutch Leonard authored a complete-game four-hit shutout, and needed every ounce of it as Detroit could only muster two hits of their own, but those two hits were good enough for the single run that decided the game. The white-hot Ty Cobb (a League-leading .432 in June) had both Tiger hits, and his first chased Eddie Ainsmith across the plate after he and Donie Bush had coaxed walks from Jack Quinn (4-4). Cobb's 8th-inning single was the only base hit for Detroit the rest of the way, but Leonard (3-0) was not to be denied; he pitched around three Detroit errors, and survived a 9th-inning triple by Ping Bodie because potential tying run Wally Pipp had been caught attempting to steal second base on the previous pitch. White Sox 5, Red Sox 3: Lefty Williams took a shutout into the 9th inning and Happy Felsch added to his AL-leading RBI total as Chicago outpaced Boston. The visitors started quickly against Carl Mays (4-3), with a pair of runs in the 1st on Felsch's run-scoring groundout and Chick Gandil's two-run single, and extended their lead to 5-0 with singletons in the 5th (Felsch RBI single) and 6th (Nemo Leibold RBI double). Williams (7-4) had blanked Boston on six hits over the first eight, but immediately got into hot water in the 9th - Wally Schang and Ossie Vitt singled and Everett Scott tripled them home before a single out was recorded. But Lefty held his nerve and recorded the final three outs to earn the victory. [box]

Athletics 2, Browns 1: Urban Shocker and Tom Rogers matched each other nearly pitch-for-pitch, but 3rd-inning triples by Cy Perkins and Rogers himself turned out to be the difference in Philadelphia. The Browns got one on the scoreboard in their first at-bat as Austin singled, was bunted to second, and scored on George Sisler's base hit. In the 3rd, however, Perkins led off against Shocker (6-1) with a a three-bagger and Rogers followed him with another triple to tie the score; when Whitey Witt singled him home, the Athletics had the edge they needed. Rogers (4-2) allowed the lead-off man to reach in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings, but escaped unscathed each time. Ray Demmitt had a double and two singles for the Browns. [box]

Indians 9, Nationals 4: Ray Chapman had a single, double, triple and drove in three runs to lead a nine-run attack for Cleveland that took full advantage of Washington's five fielding errors. The Indians put this one in their pocket fairly early, scoring four times in the first against Harry Harper (1-7) with the help of three errors and three more (with two more unearned) in the 4th. George Uhle (4-2) was spotless for the Indians until wobbling in the 8th and yielding to Fritz Coumbe to mop up the final six outs. Bill Wambsganss had two hits and two RBI for Cleveland and Eddie Foster accomplished the same for Washington. [box]
