1919 AL - Games of Saturday, 30 August

Tigers 14, Browns 2: Detroit scored a dozen runs in the final four innings to turn a tight ball game at Sportsman's Park into a laugher. The Tigers led 2-1 behind Oscar Stanage's 4th-inning RBI single before the cart left the road for Allen Sothoron (12-13) and St. Louis in the 6th. An outburst of six hits and a fielding error was culminated by Bobby Veach's home run that plated the final three tallies of a seven-run inning, and the visitors tacked on five more in the 8th on five hits and two more Browns errors (they committed a total of five on the day). Dutch Leonard (9-10) waltzed through the St. Louis lineup to a complete-game victory; Veach has four RBI, and Stanage and Chick Shorten had three hits apiece. [box]

Browns 11, Tigers 4: St. Louis extracted their revenge in the second game of the doubleheader by pounding three doubles and two triples to come back from an early deficit and win at a canter. Detroit scored three times in the 4th on four singles, but the Browns drew even when Joe Gedeon singled home two in the 5th and Bob Jones' error allowed a run to score in the 6th. The momentum was all on the side of St. Louis from there forward - Jack Tobin tripled home two runs as part of a four-run 7th, George Sisler did the same in a four-run 8th, and Dave Davenport (5-7) and Lefty Leifield held the Tigers at bay over the final few innings. Sisler knocked in three runs and scored three times, and Ty Cobb and Chick Shorten each had three safeties for Detroit. [box]

White Sox 5, Indians 1: Bill James pitched around six free passes by suffocating the Indians batters on five hits and five White Sox had at least two hits as Chicago won in Cleveland. Buck Weaver put the White Sox ahead with an RBI single in the 3rd, but Cleveland countered almost immediately in the 4th when Ray Chapman doubled, Tris Speaker singled and James threw away a ground ball off the bat of Joe Harris. It was still 1-1 headed into the late innings as James and Elmer Myers (11-3) held the batters at bay, but Chicago finally broke out in the 8th. Joe Jackson drew a walk to start things off and, following a forceout, three consecutive singles scored two runs; after James bunted runners over to second and third, Nemo Leibold delivered the killing blow with a two-run single that made the score 5-1. James (2-1) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning, but then struck out Harris and retired Larry Gardner an a tapper back to the mound. Buck Weaver led the Chicago attack with three base hits. [box]

Yankees 3, Athletics 2: Frank Baker struck the key blow with a two-run triple and Bob Shawkey protected a slim lead gamely to the finish as New York beat Philadelphia by a nose. The first two batters in the Yankee 3rd reached base and Baker then followed with a deep drive to center that scored them both; when Del Pratt skied out deep to left, Baker scored and New York led by a score of 3-0. The A's jumped on Shawkey to start the 4th, putting together four hits, but Sailor Bob got Wickey McAvoy to ground into a crucial double play with the bases loaded; another PHA run in the 5th made it a 3-2 game and it was all still to play for at the Polo Grounds. Shawkey (17-10) was up to the task, though, in the late innings as he held Philadelphia to one hit over the final four frames and Win Noyes (0-3) was a tough-luck loser despite pitching nearly as well. Joe Dugan had three hits for the Athletics. [box]
