1919 AL - Games of Sunday, 31 August

White Sox 7, Indians 2: Lefty Williams broke open the game with a two-run double in the 8th inning and pitched a complete-game for his League-leading twenty-third victory, as Chicago handled Cleveland again to finish off a three-game series sweep at League Park. The visitors had inched their way to a 3-1 lead through seven innings, but the bottom of the Chicago order got to Stan Coveleski (13-15) in the 8th. With one out, Happy Felsch doubled and the free-swinging Chick Gandil drew a base on balls. Coveleski whiffed Swede Risberg, but Ray Schalk singled on the infield to load the bases. That brought Williams to the plate and, though certainly not known for his batting prowess, he managed to ping one past third base and down the left-field line for a two-base hit that put space between the two clubs. An unearned run in the 8th wasn't enough to knock Williams (23-10) off track and he retired the final four Clevelanders in order. Felsch had three hits and scored three runs, while Nemo Leibold also chipped in three hits. [box]

Yankees 3, Athletics 2: Carl Mays got three early runs behind him and made them stand up as New York slipped past Philadelphia. The Yankees staked him to a 3-0 cushion in the first three innings behind big hits - an RBI double by Wally Pipp in the 1st and solo home runs by Duffy Lewis and Chick Fewster in the 2nd and 3rd - and then the sub-mariner worked to keep the rope taut the rest of the way. The A's got an unearned run in the 5th thanks to Mays' own miscue and then string together two hits and walk in the 8th to push across another, but Mays (7-7) retired Terry Turner with the tying run on third base and then set down two pinch-hitters in the 9th to close out the game. Browns 4, Tigers 3: Jimmy Austin doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning as St. Louis won an overtime affair against Detroit. Three walks from Slim Love, one with the bases loaded, had enabled the Browns to rally for two game-tying runs in the 7th and both clubs squandered bases-loaded opportunities in the 9th - Bob Jones flying out for Detroit, and Baby Doll Jacobson lining into an inning-ending double play for St. Louis. Hank Severeid led off the home 11th with a base hit and was bunted to second by PH Earl Smith; Austin then drive one into the left-center field gap to chase the Browns' catcher home with the winning run. George Sisler and Harry Heilmann had three hits each, and Urban Shocker got credit for the win with five innings of scoreless relief work. [box]

Nationals 6, Red Sox 4: Washington smacked six two-base hits and turned four double plays in the field to outlast Babe Ruth and Boston at Griffith Stadium. A Clyde Milan RBI groundout and Frank Ellerbe single in the 3rd gave Washington a 4-2 lead, and three doubles in the 7th and 8th innings provided two more runs. With the Babe on the field, though, it seems no lead is safe and his triple in the 8th led to two Boston runs and a tight game that brought Jim Shaw on in relief of Tom Zachary (2-3). Shaw extinguished the fire in the 8th and then got a double-play grounder for the final outs after issuing a leadoff walk in the 9th. Ruth had a single, double and triple while Stuffy McInnis had three singles. [box]
