Red Sox 7, Indians 1: Harry Hooper had three hits, scored two runs and drove in two more as Boston powered past Cleveland. The Indians took an early lead when Everett Scott's error allowed Larry Gardner to score in the 2nd, but big Boston innings in the 5th and 8th were too much for the Tribe to handle. Hopper's two-run single drew first blood in a four-run 5th and he singled, stole second, and scored the final run of a three-run 8th. Boston benefited from five Cleveland errors (three by Gardner at the hot corner), leading to five unearned runs, and the sharp hurling of Waite Hoyt (8-4), who allowed only four hits and a walk. Yankees 6, Browns 2: Ping Bodie belted a triple and a homer to lead an eleven-hit attack that carried New York over St. Louis in Upper Manhattan. His homer started the Yankee recovery from an early 2-0 deficit and his triple began a 4th-inning rally that broke a tie with three runs that would prove to be the difference in the contest. Truck Hannah and Chick Fewster contributed RBI hits in that outburst, and George Mogridge (5-8) went the distance on the hill to earn the victory. [box]
Browns 4, Yankees 3: Two-out run-scoring singles from George Sisler and Hank Severeid snapped a 2-2 tie in the 8th inning and led St. Louis to a win that split the afternoon's twin bill. New York had scored twice in the early innings to grab the lead, but Bert Gallia's two-run homer in the 5th leveled the scores. With two out in the 8th and Joe Gedeon on second, Sisler singled home the tie-breaking run and then scored himself on base hits by Ray Demmitt and Severeid. This turned out to be just enough for Gallia (11-10) to close the deal, retiring the final six Yanks after allowing a solo shot to Duffy Lewis which cut the lead to a single run. [box]
White Sox 7, Athletics 3: The Chicago offense was again too much for Philadelphia pitching, as four straight hits to begin the 4th inning led to four runs which separated the two clubs for the rest of the day. After Joe Jackson and Happy Felsch had singled to begin the frame, Chick Gandil tripled and Swede Risberg doubled to send the Sox on their way. Grover Lowdermilk (6-5) tossed a largely-comfortable nine innings, surviving a bit of an uprising in the 9th to complete the task in style by striking out the final three As. [box]
Tigers 7, Nationals 6: Detroit built a substantial lead in the early innings, and then held on for dear life to escape with a close win in Washington. Holding a narrow 3-2 lead in the 6th, the Tigers took advantage of two National fielding errors to score four times and (seemingly) take complete control of the outcome. But Washington scrambled back, scoring three times in the 7th (and having a fourth gunned down at the plate) and once more in the 8th to close back within a single run. When Howie Shanks started the home 9th by reaching on a Bob Jones error, it appeared that the home team would complete the comeback, but Dutch Leonard (10-11) retired the next three men, including a game-ending whiff of Joe Judge, to end the game in Detroit's favor. Bobby Veach knocked in three runs for the winners without recording a base hit. [box]
