AC Milan 2023/24 replay - 6a giornata

27 September 2023: Cagliari are back into the top flight of Italian football, so the annual trip across the Ligurian Sea to Sardinia beckons . . . Milan will be looking to build upon their demolition of Verona (despite some squad rotations, as Leao and Giroud are missing from the attack) while the rossoblu will be looking to capture precious points as they seek to stabilize their Serie A existence.

Cagliari (3-5-2): Radunovic; Wieteska, Dossena, Hatzidiakos (Obert 46); Makoumbou, Piugello, Sulemana (Azzi 46), Zarra; Nandez, Petagna, Luvumbo

Milan (4-3-3): Sportiello; Tomori, Thiaw, Hernandez, Florenzi; Adli, Loftus-Cheek, Reijnders; Okafor, Pulisic, Chukweze

The visitors looked to grab the Sardinians by the horns early, when Hernandez burst through the box in the 25th minute and was checked to the ground by Zappa; referee Daniele Orsato pointed to the spot, but Hernandez saw his penalty strike tipped around the post by Radunovic. Possession was fairly even for the remainder of the half but, when the ball fell loose just outside the box after a Cagliari corner, Zappa was there fist to toe it past Sportiello and the home side had the lead on its first (and, it turns out, only) shot on goal of the game. Milan went into the break fuming, but decided not to make any changes for the second half and gradually asserted control as the game wore on. Less than ten minutes into the second stanza Chukwueze forced a turnover in the Calgiari third and fed Loftus-Cheek for a smart finish into the top shelf, and Milan were back level with more than a half-hour remaining to grab all of the points. Though the rossoneri had much more of the ball over that span, the Cagliari defense held them to a single shot on goal the rest of the way, Hernandez being parried comfortably by Radunovic, and saw out the draw they had probably hoped for all along. Milan, however, will see it as a chance gone unfulfilled and another early hurdle in the race for the scudetto. [scoresheet]
