1919 AL - Games of Monday, 23 June

Results of the games played on the 60th day of the 1919 American League season . . .

Yankees 7, Athletics 2: Bob Shawkey pitched a complete-game five-hitter and went three-for-three with two RBI at the plate to lead New York over the Athletics at the Polo Grounds. Shawkey (7-5) knocked in the tying run in the 2nd and the Yanks' final run in the 7th, while scattering five hits and three walks and holding the A's scoreless after Braggo Roth's two-run homer (6) in the 1st inning. Frank Baker had three hits in five trips, and Roger Peckinpaugh homered (2) and singled. [box]

Nationals 7, Red Sox 4: Washington scored three runs in the top of the 9th to cap a late surge that carried them past the Red Sox at Fenway. Boston had taken a 4-1 lead through five innings against Harry Harper by bunching together eight hits in the 2nd and 5th innings, but Joe Judge's two-run double cut the BOS edge to one run in the top of the 6th and a walk, wild pitch and Sam Rice single tied the game in the 7th. Outside of the two scoring innings, Harper (2-9) was on the ball, holding BOS to two hits over the final four innings. In the top of the 9th, with George Dumont (1-2) on to relieve the tiring Ray Caldwell, the Nationals got straight to business - Clyde Milan singled, Rice walked and Mike Menosky was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. That brought up Patsy Gharrity, who doubled to left-center to score two and then scored with two outs when Harper chipped in a run-scoring base hit. The lanky lefthander then set down the heart of the Boston order in succession in the bottom of the 9th. Milan and Gharrity had three hits apiece, as did Everett Scott. [box]

Indians 5, White Sox 2: Jim Bagby pitched nine fine innings and Cleveland capitalized on four White Sox errors to win on at League Park. Single CLE runs in the 3rd and 4th were aided by three infield fielding miscues, and an outfield bobble by Nemo Leibold produced a third unearned run in the 6th. Bagby only allowed three hits over the first eight innings - two of those coming in 4th to produce Chicago's only run - before an Indian error helped the Sox get another in the 9th, but he retired Swede Risberg with the bases loaded to seal the decision. Bill Wambsganss and Joe Jackson each knocked in two runs. [box]

Tigers 4, Browns 2: Detroit pushed the go-ahead runs across on infield grounders in support of Dutch Leonard's pitching and won a close game at home. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the 4th, the Tigers got runners on second and third with no one out against Urban Shocker (8-2); Bob Jones hit a dribbler between the plate and first base to score one run, and Oscar Stanage rolled one to second base that scored the run that put Detroit ahead. Leonard (4-2) was right on top of the Browns from there; he got into a little trouble when the first two reached in the 9th, but retired the side without damage to lock down the win. Wally Gerber had two hits for St. Louis, including an inside-the-park home run. [box]
