1919 AL - Games of Tuesday, 24 June

White Sox 1, Indians 0: Lefty Williams was imperious in front of the home fans, pitching ten shutout innings, but could only earn the win when Nemo Leibold scored on Buck Weaver's single through a drawn-in infield in the bottom of the 10th. Williams (10-4) and Stan Coveleski were filling the cranks' scorecards with blanks all day and, after Chicago loaded the bases with one away in the 1st and failed to score, there were few threats to do otherwise. The key blow came when Leibold led off the 10th against Coveleski with a double down the right-field line; Eddie Collins bunted him the third, and the infield came in as Weaver came to the plate. His sharp grounder to the left side got between the shortstop and third baseman and Leibold trotted home with the game-winner to make a hard-luck loser of Coveleski (5-7), who had three of Cleveland's six hits. Joe Jackson had three safeties as well. [box]

Nationals 4, Red Sox 3: Eddie Foster drove in three runs and Washington held the Sox off at the finish line to win a close one in Boston. Dick Robertson and Ray Caldwell (2-6) were hooked up in a good one, with the score 1-1 through six, when Washington got their snouts in front. Robertson led off the 7th with a base hit and Joe Judge and Foster followed with singles of their own to score a run for a 2-1 lead. The Nats followed a similar script in the 9th - Walter Johnson, on in relief of Robertson (3-0), singled and advanced to third on Judge's double and both men scored on Foster's two-run hit. Johnson had some trouble locking the the barn door, allowing three singles and a pair of runs in the bottom of the 9th, but managed to strand the tying run at second base when he got Amos Strunk to ground out to second base. Harry Hooper drew three walks from the leadoff spot for the Red Sox. [box]

Browns 3, Tigers 2: George Sisler had four hits and ran St. Louis to the go-ahead run in a tight ballgame in Detroit. The clubs were wrestling to a 2-2 tie when Sisler singled with two outs in the 7th against Howard Ehmke (5-10). Sisler then stole second base and scampered to third when Eddie Ainsmith's throw went through to the outfield, and scored when Baby Doll Jacobson laced a two-base hit to left field. The Tigers had a chance to knot the game back up in the 8th, but Harry Heilmann was gunned down at the plate by Earl Smith on Ira Flagstead's two-out single. Bert Gallia (5-5) then retired the side in order in the bottom of the 9th to secure the win. [box]

Yankees 6, Athletics 1: Frank Baker homered, Duffy Lewis scored three times, and Jack Quinn suffocated the A's in New York. Baker homered (10) in the 1st, and then Lewis tripled and scored to give the Yanks a quick lead; Lewis walked and scored in the 3rd, and singled after Baker's walk in the 7th before both Yankees scored on Del Pratt's single. Quinn (6-5) allowed only a single unearned run, walking four while striking out three. Tillie Walker had three hits and a steal for Philadelphia. [box]
