1919 AL - Games of Friday, 15 August

White Sox 3, Red Sox 0: Lefty Williams allowed only four Boston batters to reach base, and became the circuit's first twenty-game winner in fine style with a complete-game shutout. Chicago scored twice in the 5th when the top three men in the order went double-triple-double against Waite Hoyt (5-2), and that was more than enough for Lefty. He had a no-hitter through the first six innings, retiring fifteen in a row at one stretch, and struck out Babe Ruth for the final out of the contest. Nemo Leibold and Eddie Collins had three hits apiece for the winners. [box]

Indians 14, Nationals 1: It was all Cleveland from the first pitch at League Park - the first four Indians reached base against Jim Shaw (11-15) in a four-run 1st inning, and it was 10-1 by the end of the 4th. Fourteen Cleveland hits and nine free passes from Washington pitchers turned the basepaths into an Indian traffic jam while Elmer Myers (10-2) was scything through the Nationals, allowing only three hits after the 3rd inning. Tris Speaker and Joe Harris each had three hits and three RBI, and Jack Graney reached base four times at the top of the order. [box]

Yankees 14, Tigers 2: New York pounded out sixteen hits, including four doubles and two triples, on their way to a destruction of the Tigers in Detroit. Five of those hits (and three of the doubles), in addition to two Detroit fielding miscues, came in a seven-run 4th inning that crushed any hopes the Tigers may have had for a win this afternoon and made a winner of Bob Shawkey (14-9) who not only pitched a five-hit complete game, but had four hits and three RBI of his own. Ping Bodie also drove in three for the Yanks. [box]

Browns 8, Athletics 2: Ken Williams had four hits, including his fifth home run of the season, to lead St. Louis to an early 8-1 lead that led to a win at Sportsman's Park. Williams knocked in the first run of the game with a two-out RBI single in the 1st, singled and scored in the 3rd, and homered in the 6th for St. Louis' final run. Baby Doll Jacobson had a single and two triples and George Sisler knocked in two runs, while Lefty Leifield (3-1) scattered nine hits to earn the victory. [box]
