1919 AL - Games of Thursday, 14 August

Browns 8, Athletics 1: Hank Severeid had four hits and a pair of runs knocked home as St. Louis piled up fifteen hits in an easy win over Philadelphia. Severeid's RBI triple helped to fuel a three-run 5th that stretched the Browns' lead to 7-1 and put the game out of reach, and Bert Gallia (8-7) - despite control problems that led to six walks - held the A's to only three base hits, all singles. White Sox 3, Red Sox 2: Once again, Nemo Leibold was a last-chance hero, as his 10th-inning single scored Eddie Murphy to give Chicago a walk-off win over Boston at Comiskey Park. The White Sox took a 2-0 lead in the 4th after Joe Jackson and Happy Felsch belted back-to-back RBI doubles, but Babe Ruth homered (22) in the 6th and reached on a Swede Risberg error in the 8th to prolong the inning to allow a Stuffy McInnis sacrifice fly that tied the game. The home team looked as if they might grab the game in the last of the 9th, when two walks and a Jackson single loaded the bases with only one out, but Bob McGraw came out of the bullpen to get Risberg to get the next two men to ground back to the box - Risberg into a force out at home, and Schalk for the final out of the inning. But McGraw's touch did not extend to extra frames - PH Murphy led off with a double, and Leibold hit the game-winning stroke in Chicago's final at-bat for the fourth time this season to make a complete-game winner of Eddie Cicotte (19-7). Felsch had two doubles on the afternoon. [box]

Nationals 4, Indians 2: Indians first-sacker Doc Johnston made three errors, two of which came in a fateful 9th inning that saw Washington score three times to turn the tables and defeat Cleveland in front of their home crowd. Cleveland had a 2-1 lead through eight innings, with the lead run coming their way in the 2nd with the help of a passed ball and a Hal Janvrin error, and that was perhaps foreshadowing for the final frame. Joe Leonard led off with a bouncer that kicked off of Johnston's glove, and one out later Clyde Milan singled to move the tying run to second. Sam Rice grounded out for the second out, moving the runners up, and Jim Bagby  - on in relief of Hi Jasper (3-4) - got Mike Menosky to skitter one wide of the bag at first; Johnston was there in time, but fumbled the catch and Leonard scored to make it 2-2. Bagby then uncorked a wild pitch that plated Milan for a WAS lead before Patsy Gharrity ripped a double that scored Menosky as well. Walter Johnson (18-6), in from the pen in the 8th, allowed a single and a walk in the bottom half of the inning before retiring - who else! - Johnston for the final out. There were twelve bases on balls in the game, and only one of those free baserunners came around to score. [box]

Tigers 5, Yankees 2: Ty Cobb went four-for-four and Bernie Boland pitched a four-hitter as Detroit bested New York at Navin Field. Cobb's triple was the big blow in a four-run 4th that gave the Tigers a lead for good, and he singled and scored the club's final run in the 8th. Boland allowed a pair of runs in the 3rd when he was touched for consecutive two-baggers by Sammy Vick and Frank Baker, but that was it - the Yankees only managed two hits the rest of the way (both of those in the 6th) as Boland (15-5) waltzed home with his fifteenth victory. Baker and Ira Flagstead each had two RBI. [box
