1919 AL- Games of Tuesday, 13 May

Results from the 20th day of the 1919 American League season . . .

Tigers 6, Indians 5Bobby Veach and Harry Heilmann teamed up to create the go-ahed run in the 8th inning to decide a see-saw affair at Navin Field. The visiting Indians scored twice in the 1st on Elmer Smith's third home run of the season, but this was quickly answered by three in the bottom half behind triples by Veach and Ira Flagstead. Detroit led 5-2 when Cleveland strung together four singles and a Heilmann miscue to retake the lead in the 7th , but the home club immediately answered in their half behind Babe Ellison's RBI double. With Stan Coveleski on to start the 8th for Cleveland, Veach greeted him with a single and a swipe of second and then Heilmann singled up the middle to chase Veach across the plate. Cleveland got two men on base in the 9th, but Hooks Dauss got Larry Garnder to bounce into a game-ending 3-6-1 double play. Ray Chapman and Ira Flagstead each had three hits and Flagstead drove home three men as well. [box]

White Sox 3, Browns 2Chick Gandil doubled home Eddie Collins with the go-ahead run in the last of the 8th, and three White Sox hurlers combined on a four-hitter as Chicago edged St. Louis at Comiskey Park. The Browns had taken a 2-1 lead on Jimmy Austin's two-out RBI double in the 5th but STL starter Dave Davenport did himself harm with an errant pickoff throw in the 7th that put Gandil in scoring position where PH Eddie Murphy could push him home with a single to re-knot the score. In the following inning Collins led off with a single, went to third on Happy Felsch's base hit, and scored on Gandil's ground ball down the left-field line. Dickey Kerr retired the side in the 9th despite a Swede Risberg error, while Collins, Gandil and Risberg each collected two hits on the day. [box]
