1919 AL - Games of Tuesday, 29 April

The schedule gets underway in earnest, as today marks the first day on which all eight clubs are in action . . .

White Sox 8, Tigers 1Eddie Cicotte scattered six hits and one walk against a tough Detroit lineup, and his teammates belted fourteen hits on their way to an easy win in Detroit. Joe Jackson and Chick Gandil had three hits each. [box]

Nationals 11, Red Sox 10Washington scored six runs in the bottom of the 9th to shock Boston and win a high-scoring affair in the Nation's capital. Both clubs sprang from the gate in a hurry, the Sox scoring four in their first at-bat behind Babe Ruth's three-run homer (his third game on the trot with a long ball) and the Nats string together five straight singles to plate three in the bottom half. The pace slowed from there, and it was 7-5 in favor of Boston when it appeared they had salted the contest away with three runs in the 8th courtesy of some wayward Washington deliveries. But it all came undone in the final frame for Herb Pennock and Ray Caldwell as six hits and two walks were amassed by the home side before Val Picinich's two-run double brought the unlikely rally to a conclusion. Ruth and Patsy Gharrity had four RBI apiece and Sam Rice had four hits. [box]

Browns 9, Indians 2The St. Louis offense ran Indians starter Guy Morton out of the box after only 2.1 innings and eight runs, and the Cleveland lineup had no answers for Allan Sothoron's five-hit pitching performance. Jack Tobin and George Sisler each stroked three base hits and Ken Williams knocked in three. [box]

Athletics 6, Yankees 3The A's scored six times in the first two innings and then Jong Johnson held off the Yankees from there. Five Athletics had at least two hits on the afternoon, with Red Shannon striking three from the leadoff spot. [box]
