1919 AL - Games of Thursday, 1 May

Red Sox 7, Yankees 4Boston scored three runs in the 8th to tie the game, and Babe Ruth hit a three-run circuit clout in the bottom of the 9th to give the Sox an exciting win at Fenway. The Yanks were cruising 4-1 into the 8th behind George Mogridge and three hits from Del Pratt, but that all changed in the 8th. After Mogridge retired the first batter, he surrendered consecutive two-base hits to Ruth, Stuffy McInnis and Ossie Vitt and then chucked a wild pitch before Frank Baker's fielding miscue allowed the tying run to score. In the 9th, Harry Hooper led off with a single and moved to second on Strunk's base hit with one away. This sent Mogridge to the bench in favor of Bob McGraw, but the reliever's afternoon was very short-lived as Ruth greeted him with his fourth home run of the season to end the game. [box]

Babe Ruth, BOS

Tigers 4, Indians 1Bernie Boland allowed only six hits and Harry Heilmann scored one run and knocked in a pair of runs as Detroit sent Cleveland to its fifth consecutive defeat to start the season. The two runs that Detroit scored in in the top of the first, on RBI hits from Babe Ellison and Heilmann, would be enough for Boland on the afternoon but Heilmann drove another on home in 8th after Ty Cobb had singled and stole second. Tris Speaker and Larry Gardner had four of Cleveland's six hits between them. [box]
