1919 AL - Games of Wednesday, 30 April

Browns 12, Indians 3Joe Gedeon was a one-man wrecking crew at Sportsman's Park this afternoon, clubbing two doubles and two triples, and knocking in four runners, to lead the Browns to a resounding win over the struggling Indians. Once again, Cleveland starting pitching couldn't escape the early innings unscathed, as St. Louis scored five times in the first two stanzas and led 6-0 before CLE could muster a whimper with a pair in the 5th. But Gedeon doubled in both the 6th and 7th and the Browns scored six more times against the Cleveland mound reserves to put the home crowd in joyful spirits. Jack Tobin had three hits and George Sisler also had four RBI as part of the Browns' seventeen-hit attack. [box]

White Sox 8, Tigers 3The White Sox whacked fourteen hits, four for extra bases, and stole three bags on their way to a comfortable road win over the Tigers. While his teammates were putting five runs in the bank over the first four innings, Dickie Kerr was spinning a gem, allowing only two Tigers to reach second until the 8th inning. Buck Weaver had three hits and Happy Felsch collected two hits, two walks and two steals. Harry Heilmann hit his second homer of the young season for Detroit.  [box]

Yankees 6, Athletics 3New York broke apart a tie game with a three-run 7th inning and Hank Thormahlen held off the Athletics at the Polo Grounds. With the score tied at three through six, Thormahlen, Sammy Vick and Roger Peckinpaugh began the home 7th with singles to chase A's starter Mule Watson. Tom Rogers came on to pitch, and seemed as if he would limit the damage after getting two outs in exchange for only a single run, but three more consecutive bingles from Del Pratt, Duffy Lewis and Ping Bodie continued the rally and Thormahlen held Philadelphia hitless over the final four frames. Lewis went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. [box]

Red Sox 5, Nationals 4Boston built a big early lead over Washington but, in the end, had to call on Babe Ruth (who had the day off in the field) to take the mound and record the final out to avoid a second-straight 9th inning collapse at Griffith Stadium. The Red Sox had gradually accumulated a 5-0 cushion through the first seven innings (partly thanks to WAS miscues that led to four unearned runs), but the Nationals got one back in the 8th on a two-out rally capped by Joe Judge's RBI single. Again in the 9th after two were gone,  a double, a walk and Val Picinich''s three-run home run cut the lead to a single run and sent starter Ray Caldwell to the showers. Ruth took the hill to face PH Joe Leonard, and got the young infielder to sky one to Amos Strunk in CF for the final out. [box]
