Results from the 10th day of the 1919 American League season . . .

Indians 9, Tigers 7Elmer Smith hit a pair of home runs to help bring Cleveland back from an early deficit to win its first game of the season. Trailing 5-1 in the 4th, the Indians took advantage of a pair of Detroit three fielding miscues in the inning to score four times and get back into the ball game. Smith homered to lead off the 6th, and then again in the 8th provide an insurance run, to make a winner of Elmer Myers who came on to pitch 4.2 innings of fine relief.  [box]

Nationals 4, Athletics 2: Jim Shaw tiptoed around fourteen baserunners to toss a complete game, and Washington got pop from the bottom of the lineup to capture a 4-2 win in Philadelphia. Shaw allowed nine hits and five walks, but stranded eleven As on the base paths while Hal Janvrin (two hits, HR), Val Picinich (two hits, 2B) and four Athletic errors provided enough scoring to leave the Nationals on top. [box]

Red Sox 6, Yankees 1Sad Sam Jones pitched around six bases on balls, and Babe Ruth hit yet another home run as the Sox buried New York at the Polo Grounds. The Yankees left twelve men on base while eight of the nine Boston starters had at least one base hit - Ruth's was his 5th long ball of the year, giving him 11 RBI in the season's first seven games. Stuffy McInnis protected the Babe with three hits and an RBIO of his own. [box]

White Sox 10, Browns 4Buck Weaver had three hits (two of which were doubles). scored four times and knocked home three to lead Chicago to a victory at St. Louis. The White Sox trailed 3-2 before they erupted for six runs in the 5th inning when Weaver's one-out double kicked off a parade of seven straight South Siders reaching base against Bert Gallia. Happy Felsch had three hits, and he and Joe Jackson each drove in three men.  [box]
