1919 AL - Games of Thursday, 8 May

Nationals 3, Red Sox 0Walter Johnson was overpowering at Fenway, allowing only five Red Sox hits and whiffing five on his way to a complete-game shutout. After the 1st inning, Johnson did not allow two men to reach base without benefit of an error in any inning and held Boston to a zero-for-five with runners in scoring position. Howie Shanks supported him with three hits, and Sam Rice knocked in a pair. [box]

Indians 4, White Sox 3: Ray Chapman singled home Doc Johnston with two gone in the bottom of the 11th inning to end a pitcher's duel in Cleveland. The clubs had each scored three times in the first three innings, but then Eddie Cicotte and Stan Coveleski bore down and filled the scorecard with zeroes through none innings. Elmer Myers came on for Cleveland to keep the goose eggs coming, and Cicotte kept firing for the White Sox but was ultimately undone by Buck Weaver's fumble that moved the eventual winning run into scoring position before Chapman's hit. Chapman had three hits, as did Chicago's Ray Schalk.  [box]

Yankees 8, Athletics 2: Frank Baker drove home three runs and the Yankees took advantage of five bases on balls and two Athletic errors to win going away at Shibe Park. New York scored a run in the first on Baker's sacrifice fly, and added three more in the 2nd behind back-to-back triples from Duffy Lewis and Ping Bodie.Bob Shawkey was largely untroubled on the slab for the New Yorkers, allowing only four hits outside of a brief Philadelphia rally in the 4th.  [box]
