1919 AL - Games of Saturday, 3 May

Tigers 2, Indians 0Hooks Dauss spun a three-hit shutout, making Bob Jones' 1st-inning homer enough to carry the Tigers past Cleveland. While Dauss walked five (while striking out no one), he only allowed runners to reach second on two occasions and benefited from a key double play in the 6th after he had walked the first two men. He then retired eleven of the final twelve Clevelanders to put an exclamation point on his afternoon.  [box]

Yankees 12, Red Sox 4New York piled up sixteen hits (fifteen of them singles) and seven walks on their way to a cake walk at Fenway Park. It was a 3-2 Boston lead before the Yankees put seven runs on the board in the 5th inning - the frame began with two straight fielding errors by the Sox, and it went downhill from there as five of the next six Yanks singled (and the other one walked). Leading the New York attack from the leadoff spot was Sammy Vick, with four hits (including the only extra-base hit) and three RBI. Bob Shawkey wasn't terribly sharp, but benefited from the offensive support to hang in there for nine innings and get the win. [box]

Athletics 6, Nationals 4Frank Thomas homered, and Braggo Roth and George Burns each had two hits in a Philadelphia home win. Roth doubled in a run, and then scored himself on Burns' two-run single, as part of a four-run 3rd that put the As out in front, and Thomas hit a solo home run in the 8th for an insurance run that helped Scott Perry go the distance on the hill. Val Picinich hit his second homer of the season for Washington.  [box]
