1919 AL - Games of Tuesday, 6 May

Browns 5, Indians 4George Sisler had a single, double and triple and the Browns scored twice in the top of the 9th to edge the Indians. With the score tied at three heading into the 9th, Jack Tobin and Joe Gedeon led off with base hits against Jim Bagby, and Ken Williams and Baby Doll Jacobson followed one out later with RBI singles to put St. Louis in front. Cleveland put the first two men on in the bottom half, and loaded the bases with one out and a run in, but Ernie Koob got Elmer Smith to pop up to third before striking out Larry Gardner to silence the gathered throng at League Park. [box]

Nationals 5, Red Sox 3Washington scored twice in the 8th to tie the game, and twice more in the 11th to defeat the Red Sox in Boston. Hal Janvrin's two-RBI single plated the tying runs against Ray Caldwell, who had only allowed five hits over the first seven innings, and then Joe Judge began the winning rally by starting the 11th off with a triple. Eddie Foster singled him home, and Howie Shanks knocked in an insurance run that Harry Thompson made stick with an inning of scoreless relief. Shanks and Janvrin had three hits each and Stuffy McInnis stroked four hits for the Red Sox. [box]

Yankees 4, Athletics 2Hank Thormahlen allowed ten hits and a walk, but held the A's to two runs over nine innings, while Roger Peckinpaugh, Frank Baker and Duffy Lewis each had two hits for New York. Braggo Roth's second homer of the season gave Philadelphia a bit of hope in the 8th, but Thormahlen kept the Athletics from threatening the rest of the way. [box]

White Sox 9, Tigers 7Chicago pounded fifteen hits, six of which came in a six-run 2nd inning that seemed as if it would settle matters early, but the Tigers had other ideas. They closed the score to 9-7 behind Harry Heilmann's single. double, triple and walk and brought the tying run to the plate in the 9th in the person of Ty Cobb  before Dave Danforth came off the bench to record the final two outs in relief of Lefty Williams. Buck Weaver and Joe Jackson had three hits each for the winners, and Nemo Leibold drove home three of the White Sox tallies. [box]
