1919 AL - Games of Sunday, 4 May

White Sox 3, Browns 0: Eddie Cicotte was nearly untouchable in front of the Comiskey Park crowd, holding St. Louis to three baserunners (all singles) and setting down the last ten Browns of the game. His teammates used scientific ball (four SH) and timely hitting (5-for-11 with RISP) to plate six runs in support, with Happy Felsch reaching base four times. [box]

Indians 6, Tigers 4A five run Cleveland rally in the 7th inning was enough to overcome an early Detroit lead, and an active day from Ty Cobb, and give the Indians the home win. Detroit led 3-0 and 4-1 behind Cobb's home run, two walks and three runs scored, but Howard Ehmke could not hold it together in the late innings, allowing one in the 6th and then five in the 7th (on five singles and two walks). This was all that Stan Coveleski needed to polish off the victory as he retired nine of the final ten Tigers to face him. [box]

Nationals 6, Athletics 4Washington rode a four-run 1st inning to a triumph over the clumsy A's (five errors) at Griffith Stadium. Philadelphia starter Walt Kinney was touched up early by the Nats, as Howie Shanks led off the bottom of the 1st with a double and was followed one out later by four straight safeties topped off by Mike Menosky's RBI triple. Walter Johnson was looking comfortable on the hill for Washington, but he faltered in the 7th when three Philadelphia singles cut the lead to a single run; Menosky delivered again for an insurance run in the bottom half of that inning and Johnson held on for the win. [box]
