1919 AL - Games of Monday, 5 May

Red Sox 5, Yankees 3Amos Strunk doubled and knocked in a pair at Fenway as the red-hot Red Sox edged the Yankees. NY starter Jack Quinn came out of the gate ice cold, and before the cracks had settled into their seats the Bostons had put their first six men on base and scored four runs in the opening stanza; although Quinn righted the ship in style from that point forward, setting down twenty of twenty-one Sox at one stretch, the damage was done. George Dumont pitched seven strong innings before giving way to Carl Mays for the final six outs. Sammy Vick went a perfect four-for-four in the losing cause for the Gothams.[box]

Nationals 6, Athletics 4Four different Nationals had two hits apiece, and Sam Rice doubled home the eventual winning runs in 7th inning as Washington outpaced Philadelphia. The visitors and starter Jim Shaw were having things all their way with a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the 6th before the A's made things interesting with a three-run inning fueled largely by Shaw's wildness (three of his eight walks in the inning). But Rice followed singles by Eddie Foster and Clyde Milan with his double in the next half-inning to open up just enough breathing space for Shaw, who labored around five baserunners in the final two frames to hang on for his second win of the young season. Philadelphia left twelve men on base, and could only hit 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Pitcher Walt Kinney got a start in RF for the Athletics and went 2-for-four with a pair of RBI.  [box]
